Alex Song was presented as a new FC Barcelona player on August 21, 2012, the second new signing of the Tito Vilanova era after Jordi Alba and the seventh African player to appear for FC Barcelona. The Cameroonian cost 19 million euros and signed for five seasons, with a buyout clause of 80 million euros.

Alexandre Dimitri Song Billong was born in Douala, Cameroon on September 9,1987. In 2004, he moved to France to play his first professional football for Bastia at the age of 17. In his first season in Europe, he played 32 matches, and caught the attention of Arsenal, who signed him.

At Arsenal he played nine games in his first Premier League campaign, his official debut being a late appearance as a substitute in a 2-0 win over Everton at Highbury.

During the 2006/07 winter transfer window, Arsenal sent Song on loan to Charlton Athletic. But that was not before he had scored his first goal for the Gunners in a Carling Cup fixture against Liverpool at Anfield, which the Londoners won 6-3.

The following season, Song returned to Arsenal and during the 2007/08 season started featuring more and more in French coach Arsene Wenger’s plans, particularly towards the end of the campaign.

By the 2008/09 season, Alex Song had managed to win a regular first team place and the whole of the defensive midfield system started to be based around him.

Before joining FC Barcelona, Alex Song had played seven seasons in the Premier League, playing 150 matches and scoring seven goals.

With the Cameroon national team, he has been a regular first team choice for several years and was a key member of the squad that finished as runners-up in the African Cup of Nations of 2008, held in Ghana.
